Although Hong Kong is an international financial, trade and shipping center, it does not hinder the development of agriculture in Hong Kong. Among the main policies announced by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government in its Policy Address in 2016, one is to implement a new agricultural policy to promote the modernization and sustainable development of local agriculture in Hong Kong.
Gao Yongwen, Director-General of the Food and Health Bureau of the HKSAR Government, said at a press conference in the afternoon of the 14th Policy Address that the new agricultural policy of the HKSAR Government included the establishment of an agricultural park with an area of about 75-80 hectares and the establishment of a HK$500 million "Sustainable Agricultural Development Fund".
_Agricultural parks will be established through the reclamation of private land, aiming at helping to foster knowledge in agricultural science and technology and agricultural business management, and promoting the transfer of relevant knowledge, so as to enhance productivity. The Sustainable Agricultural Development Fund will provide financial support to promote research and development of Applied Science and technology in agricultural production in Hong Kong, promote knowledge transfer, strengthen personnel training, improve agricultural infrastructure facilities, strengthen market promotion and brand building for local crops in Hong Kong, and assist individual farmers in adopting mechanized and modern farming tools. The new agricultural policy of the HKSAR Government also focuses on:
1. Conduct research on agricultural land consultants;
2. Explore feasible methods to facilitate hydroponic cultivation or other similar operations in industrial buildings/industrial zones;
3. Promoting agriculture-related leisure agriculture in planning control and land use;
4. Strengthen food safety and market promotion of fresh agricultural products in Hong Kong.
Gao Yongwen pointed out that the new agricultural policy of the SAR Government aims to promote the modernization and sustainable development of agriculture in Hong Kong by helping to enhance the competitiveness of local farms and utilizing high-quality agricultural land for agricultural purposes. This policy direction and the measures put forward by the SAR government for discussion by the public have received extensive support in previous public consultation.
He said that the SAR Government was committed to promoting the sustainable development of agriculture in Hong Kong. He believed that the adoption of new agricultural policies and comprehensive implementation of support measures would ultimately make agricultural development more effective in bringing benefits to society.
